The reviews are in for Sony’s “Venom: The Last Dance” and, sadly, they’re just as bad as what came before.
With 57 reviews counted, the film sits at 40% (5.0/10) on Rotten Tomatoes which is better than the original Venom” at 30% (4.5/10) but worse than “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” at 57% (5.4/10).
To put that in perspective, it’s still the second best comic book film adaptation released theatrically this year, behind only “Deadpool & Wolverine” at 78% but above “Joker: Folie a Deux” at 32%, “The Crow” at 23% and “Madame Web” at 11%.
Here’s a sampling of review quotes:
“At least the film ends with a fittingly poignant/ridiculous tribute to the greatest love story ever told about a man and his symbiotic alien goo.” – David Ehrlich, Indiewire
“The Venom effects are still nicely rendered, but the punchlines are a little shopworn, although this franchise’s penchant for truly bonkers sequences has not diminished.” – Tim Grierson, Screen
“This being the concluding chapter of a trilogy, it all leads to an emotional catharsis that will no doubt satisfy fans of the earlier movies, with a sweet touch of cheesy humor to offset the melancholy.” – David Rooney, THR
“Venom: The Last Dance is therefore one-half of a wonderful movie. Still, it’s worth sticking through the rest for a totally gonzo finale that’s somehow equally absurd and moving.” – Kristy Puchko, Mashable
“Watching ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ is like watching the superhero genre die for two hours.” – William Bibbiani, The Wrap
“It’s quick and brash and seemingly aware of how goofy so much of it is but it’s also awkwardly overstuffed.” – Benjamin Lee, The Guardian
“Narrative cinema rarely cares this little about actual narrative, transforming what’s supposed to be the concluding chapter of an ongoing saga into little more than pure sensation — blobs of color, bursts of sound.” – Alonso Duralde, The Film Verdict
“Venom: The Last Dance isn’t a lark, but a smirk to let you know that while everyone may be aware of what it’s up to, you’re the sucker who bought the ticket.” – Alison Willmore, Vulture
“Last Dance seems almost begging to solely be watched on airplanes, in the soporific 90 minutes between dinner service and uneasy, upright sleep. It functions best as an accidentally found object rather than something deliberately sought out.” – Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair
The film is currently on track for a domestic debut of $65 million, the lowest of the franchise to date, though it’s also targeting a healthier $100 million overseas haul this weekend. The film’s reported budget is $120 million before marketing so.
