British actor Nicholas Hoult has been set to play Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman: Legacy” film according to several sources for Deadline.

Hoult follows such actors as Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, John Shea, Michael Rosenbaum, Clancy Brown, Jon Cryer, Michael Cudlitz, Giancarlo Esposito and Jesse Eisenberg who’ve portrayed Luthor on screen in film and television.

Hoult, who was previously the runner-up to play Batman for Matt Reeves before Robert Pattinson was cast, has long been rumored for the Luthor role for many months. Alexander and Bill Skarsgard were also said to be in contention earlier this year.

He joins a cast that includes David Corenswet in the title role, and Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They’re joined by Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

The news come as Gunn earlier today said on social media that they were “running out of characters to announce”. He also dispelled an online rumor that the film’s plot is about terrorists using Kryptonian technology.

At present, Gunn has not officially responded to the Deadline report, when he does this will be updated. Gunn is directing from his screenplay based on the DC characters.

Filming is expected to get underway early next year ahead of the film’s worldwide release on July 11th 2025.
