We’re just a few hours away from the premiere of Lucasfilm’s new “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” on the Disney+ service, and reviews for the series have finally been published.

With 60 reviews counted, the series sits at an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 7.5/10 average score.

That puts it about on par with “Ahsoka” 86% (7.2/10) and the third season of “The Mandalorian” at 85% (7.5/10), and considerably behind the highest scoring “Star Wars” series – “Andor” with a 96% (9.0/10)

Here’s a sampling of review quotes that praise the show’s ambition and it’s attempt to try something different with the canon, but criticise some of the mundaneness of the storytelling:

“In giving itself permission to poke at Star Wars mythology, The Acolyte cultivates the same sense of curiosity it exhibits about its own universe.” – Alison Herman, Variety

“There are worse qualities for a new series to have than an overabundance of potential — and wherever this one ends up, it’s got enough on its mind to make the journey worthwhile.” – Angie Han, THR

“Exhibiting influences that blend martial-arts movies, young-adult fiction and the detective genre, it’s an intriguing if modest addition whose lack of connection to existing canon proves both an advantage and disadvantage.” – Brian Lowry, CNN

“This is the first Star Wars series to give off a Star Trek: The Next Generation vibe. It doesn’t help that the show’s momentum can be slow, with too many dull exposition pitstops even as episodes clock in at a light 32 to 42 minutes.” – Rob Owen, Seattle Times

“It’s a spirited effort, but in the continuum of Disney’s Star Wars hits and misses, The Acolyte lands bang in the middle.” – Ed Power, The Independent

“The Acolyte is interested in complicating the fundamental nature of the Star Wars universe. What it’s yet to find — unlike the similarly morally ambiguous Andor — is a way to convert the boldness of those ambitions into storytelling that’s just as bold.” – Keith Phipps, TV Guide

“It’s good to see another Star Wars project that, like Andor, interrogates some of the franchise’s fundamental assumptions. Entertainment-wise, though, the first half of The Acolyte is unfortunately a lot closer to The Book of Boba Fett.” – Alan Sepinwall, Rolling Stone

“The show pulls back from its most audacious possibilities in a way that suggests the heavy hand of brand management, chipping away at anything that might rock the boat.” – Sam Adams, Slate

The first two episodes of “The Acolyte” stream on Disney+ today.
