It’s official, Netflix has announced that its lavish TV series adaptation of Cixin Liu’s bestselling sci-fi trilogy “3 Body Problem” has been renewed for a second season.
The announcement was made during Netflix’s Upfronts presentation on Wednesday with a promo clip touting the renewal going online shortly after.
Netflix also reportedly says the next batch of episodes will bring the story through the end of the events depicted in the original novels. Thus it’s not clear if the show would continue beyond this point.
David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo will once return to executive produce, write, and serve as creators of the series. Netflix has also renewed its overall deal with former “Game of Thrones” showrunners Benioff and Weiss.
The eight-episode series follows Ye Wenjie, an astrophysicist who sees her father beaten to death during a struggle session in the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
Due to her scientific background, she is sent to a secret military base in a remote region. Her decision at the base to respond to contact from an alien planet affects a group of scientists in the present day, forcing them to confront humanity’s greatest threat.
Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Benedict Wong and Jonathan Pryce star.
