SPOILERS AHEAD FOR EPISODE 6 OF “SUGAR”

The Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series “Sugar” on the surface has seemed like a detective drama and modern L.A. noir.

The series revolves around John Sugar (Farrell) a private investigator hired by Hollywood titan Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his granddaughter, Olivia (Sydney Chandler).

The producers have long promised a game-changing twist at some point, and that arrived with the sixth episode where the truth was revealed – Farrell’s P.I. character is actually an alien.

There’s been hints throughout the series up to the reveal, from a line about processing alcohol 50 times faster than others, to mentions of a ‘big secret’.

In the wake of the reveal, executive producer Simon Kinberg tells People that networks and streamers had big concerns over the twist when they were pitched the show:

“There were a lot of people that loved the writing. They loved the character, because Mark Protosevich had written a beautiful script, and John Sugar was such a unique and beautiful character.

But there were a lot of places that were scared of this reveal, that it felt like the blending, or mashup of the genres, was too risky. There were some places that said, ‘Why can’t it just be a detective show? It’s a really good detective show.’

It was a big swing. Now I think once people see this episode, it will be hard to imagine this show without this element.”

The series still has two more episodes to air with the finale going up on May 17th.
