A bidding war between film and streaming heavyweights is expected to explode soon around the film rights to the volcano disaster novel “Eruption”.
The book is a collaboration of author James Patterson (“Kiss the Girls”) and the late Michael Crichton (“Jurassic Park”). Its screen rights are about to be brought to auction in the next week or two.
The project has reportedly drawn interest from most major studios, streamers and networks, as well as several high-profile directors.
The story centers a man and a woman and is said to have “Moonlighting”-style banter set against larger-than-life action sequences.
In the book a history-making eruption is about to destroy the Big Island of Hawaii. But a secret held for decades by the U.S. military is far more terrifying than any volcano.
Crichton reportedly spent a collective 25 years working on the passion project before his death in 2008. His wife Sherri discovered the unfinished manuscript along with detailed notes, interviews with experts and two decades of research.
Patterson, a fan of Crichton’s work, picked up the project and took care to adhere to the original author’s voice. The project is also being being set up as a franchise starter with plans for multiple books and films.
“Eruption” will release in book stores on June 3rd.
