“Avengers: Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo say they don’t think it’s likely Robert Downey Jr. will suit up again as Iron Man in the MCU.
Recently appearing at a film festival in Scotland, the pair spoke with GamesRadar and indicated they’ve heard the fan rumors of Tony Stark somehow returning to the MCU, and are doubtful considering they killed him off fairly definitively:
Anthony: “I don’t know how they would do it. I don’t know what the road to that would be [laughs].”
Joe: “I mean, we closed that book, so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.”
Their take comes despite the actor himself telling Esquire the other week he would happily be back, saying at the time: “Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me.”
Despite all the rumours, officially there are no plans revealed as yet to resurrect Iron Man. Downey himself is in the midst of a career surge thanks to his work in Oppenheimer” and his recent Oscar. It’s a win Joe Russo says is well deserved:
“His Oscar win was huge. It’s amazing to live vicariously through Robert, you know, that experience for him is so profound, because of the journey he’s had. I mean, it’s one of the great stories of redemption. And he’s such a lovely person, such a hard-working person. He’s a generational actor, so that level of recognition for him, I think, was validation of his redemption arc.”
If Downey were to return, it would likely be in the “Avengers: Secret Wars” films, which could start production as early as next year. The actor can currently be seen playing multiple roles in HBO’s “The Sympathizer”.
