After stirring much debate over the past week or so, Bethesda’s Todd Howard has set the record straight regarding Amazon’s “Fallout” TV series and a specific mention of an event that has gotten the fanbase in a tizzy.
As previously indicated and unlike other game-to-screen adaptations, this is a series that canonically unfolds within the same universe as the games. The events of the TV series occur in the year 2296 – around nine years after “Fallout 4” (2287) and fifteen after “Fallout: New Vegas” (2281).
However, a drawing on a blackboard seen in one of the episodes indicates that Shady Sands fell in 2277 and was nuked after. That has led to the fan speculation that New Vegas was no longer canon and angered many who peg that entry as the franchise’s best.
As the backlash mounted, Howard himself has now come forward to clear things up and tells IGN:
“We’re careful about the timeline. There might be a little bit of confusion in some places, but everything that happened in the previous games, including New Vegas, happened. We’re very careful about that. All I can say is we’re threading it tighter there, but the bombs fall just after the events of New Vegas.”
In other words, the 2277 date refers only to the Fall of the NCR’s first capital, which did take place before the events of ‘New Vegas’, and it wasn’t until years later (and just after the game) that it was decimated.
The TV series has teased that ‘New Vegas’ elements will be introduced in the second season, though a reveal shot there has also generated controversy over the dilapidated city it depicts.
