Can you smelllllllllll what the Rock is cooking? Talking about cancel culture, and how it affects people, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says he’s not keen on it. He sat down with Fox News and talked about wokeness in America:
“Today’s cancel culture, woke culture, division, etc — that really bugs me…In the spirit of that, you either succumb to that and be what other people want you to be, or you be yourself and be real … and that might make people upset and piss people off, and that’s OK.”
The “woke” culture appears to have stifled creativity over the past few years. It seems that movies and TV shows are not genuinely crafted for storytelling purposes but rather attempt to cater to a small group of individuals who become upset if there is not enough inclusion in them.
The main issue lies in the fact that the individuals being sought for inclusion do not care about the IP. New movies and shows are written, and most genuine fans are excluded, only to result in financial losses at the box office or in subscribers.
Art should provoke people. Whether it be in paintings, music, movies, or any other creative form, if it causes discomfort, that’s perfectly acceptable. As adults, these individuals should be able to be offended, move past it, and continue with their lives.
However, cancel culture tends to prefer the destruction of people’s careers. “That person said something I don’t like… that person should be silenced forever.”
Does this imply that people are not writing what they truly desire to write, or are they merely composing what they believe sounds appealing? It’s about “ticking those boxes” and not genuinely innovating, just to avoid offending anyone.
