Out promoting her new film “The Absence of Eden,” actress Zoe Saldana spoke about the recent pick-up shooting she did for the third “Avatar” due at the end of next year.
Saldana plays Neytiri in the franchise and made a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She confirms that despite filming having begun seven years ago on the second and third films, there’s still ongoing work to do.
She explains that the technology required to pull of the films takes so much time that those involved keep coming back at random – whether they’re in the right shape for it or not:
“We shot two and three, we started shooting in 2017. Two already came out, and three is still like an ongoing thing where Jim will come back and he will continuously work on it, because just that the technology requires so much time.
They called me back in January out of nowhere, and they’re like, ‘We just have some pickup shots. Can you please come in?’ I was like ‘Okay.’ He’s like ‘It’s super, you know, no hassle. It’s just little close-ups.’
And all of a sudden, they’re like, ‘Hey, so, now this shot is you on your Ikran.’ The Ikran is my dragon that I ride. And I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ Like, I haven’t gone to the gym in like… guys, I took a squat and I couldn’t get up.”
The third “Avatar” is currently targeting a December 19th 2025 release with a fourth set for 2029 and a fifth for 2031.
