In the lead-up to the release of Alex Garland’s bound to be contentious thriller Civil War, much of the discussion has been about one element of the film revealed in the trailers.
That element? In this nightmare near-future scenario, the states of Texas and California team up to join forces against the U.S. Government.
They are the largest states in the contiguous U.S., with the largest economies, but on the surface the pair hardly make for natural allies. They are often opposed politically on a number of issues, to the point the rivalry has its own wiki page.
So why would they team up? Speaking about the topic during a Q&A session after the recent SXSW premiere of the movie, Garland explains (via Screen Rant) the film provides enough details for the audience to eventually work it out:
“I personally think questions are answered. There’s a lot of things that are clearly answered. There is a fascist president who smashed the Constitution and attacked [American] citizens. And that is a very clear, answered statement.
If you want to think about why Texas and California might be allied, and putting aside their political differences, the answer would be implicit in that. So I think answers are there but you have to step to it and not expect to be spoon fed these things. It makes assumptions about the audience.”
The film itself puts the focus on a team of journalists led by Kirsten Dunst’s Lee, as they struggle to survive the escalating conflict.
Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Karl Glusman, Jefferson White, Jauni Feliz, Nelson Lee, and Jesse Plemons also star in the film which opens April 12th.
