The upcoming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” sees George Miller returning to the wastelands almost a decade since the events of ‘Fury Road’.
Years ago it was made clear that Charlize Theron wouldn’t be returning as Furiosa in the prequel, Miller opting to recast with Anya Taylor-Joy portraying the character in her early twenties (Theron was late 30s when she shot ‘Fury Road’).
Doing so, Miller opted out of the increasingly common practice of digital de-aging for certain sequences – a technique that has varied in quality across movies.
In an interview with Empire, Miller says if he’d made “Furiosa” first then Theron would’ve absolutely starred. As such, he didn’t move on from her easily but couldn’t embrace de-aging VFX either:
“As time went on, I began thinking, ‘Oh, maybe we could do de-ageing. Then I watched really masterful filmmakers like Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese, doing ‘Gemini Man’ and ‘The Irishman,’ and I saw that it hadn’t been licked. All you’d be watching is, ‘Look how well the technology works.’ It would not have been persuasive.”
As for casting Taylor-Joy in the role, it was more than just a recommendation from fellow filmmaker Edgar Wright that saw him select her. He says:
“Ultimately, it’s an intuitive response. There’s an innately resolute quality in her. She’s a very determined and rigorous person. She has a mystique about her. And she’d been trained young as a ballet dancer. Charlize trained young as a ballet dancer. There’s a precision to them that was needed.”
We’ll see the results for ourselved when “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” hits theaters on May 24th.
