Last Fall’s “The Marvels” has been Marvel Studios’ biggest flop to date. The title, released in November, grossed only $207 million worldwide, the lowest of any film in the MCU.

Reviews for the film were also mixed with a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Now that it’s been out on Disney+ and disc for a while, one of the film’s co-stars has asked fans to give it a chance.

Parris, who plays Captain Monica Rambeau in the film alongside Brie Larson as Carol Danvers and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, was unable to promote the movie until the very last minute due to the actor’s strikes.

Speaking with People recently, she says she’s disappointed she never got to do press:

“I haven’t actually done a full press run where I get to engage one-on-one, in person, face-to-face with fans. I wanted to be a part of that and feel that.”

Asked about the film’s financial failure, she puts the blame on those badmouthing the film sight unseen on social media and YouTube prior to release and hopes people will actually try it for themselves and make up their own mind:

“I think there was a lot of talk, and people hadn’t seen it. So that’s frustrating when people comment on things they haven’t actually experienced. There’s a lot of people who put a lot of their time, spirit and talent into bringing this forward.

I would hope that people would give it a fair shot by just seeing it or trying it. If you don’t like the first 10, 15 minutes, fair enough. Your time is precious. But we make these films so that it can be an escape from your real world in a moment for levity and joy and fantasticalness.

You do not have to like something, but give it a chance by actually seeing it and forming your own opinion, and if you did, then that’s fair. That’s how you feel, and I cannot take that from you.”

Asked the inevitable question about superhero fatigue that is always circling around any discussion of the genre these days, she says the term isn’t accurate:

“I think people want good movies, and if there’s superheroes and there’s passion and there’s storytelling, and you’re not giving it to me by numbers, I think people are here for it. So I don’t know, I think we say that because it’s easy to just say, ‘Oh, superhero fatigue,’ but I think we want – because I watch them as well – I want good stories with great characters, and that mean something and have something to say.”

The news follows recent talk that Marvel is veering away from sequels that Disney doesn’t think will perform and instead lean into franchises that are working.
