2004’s Nicolas Cage-led “National Treasure” was a major four-quadrant family action-adventure film hit for Disney, with good reviews and a box-office haul of $347.5 million off a $100 million budget.
Its 2007 sequel wasn’t as well-received but still scored $459.2 million from a $130 million budget. For years, there’s been talk of a third film which has never eventuated.
Cage himself back in January indicated that he holds the two films in a positive light and is amazed that Disney hasn’t wanted to make a third one but otherwise seemed very upbeat about them.
Today though, out promoting his new film “Arcadian” at SXSW, he tells Screen Rant rather bluntly:
“No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there.”
It’s not clear if anything has changed between now and January since Cage’s last comments, but he does seem more pessimistic and this seemingly ends any NT3 talk for now.
Disney did revive the franchise in late 2022 with the spin-off series “Edge of History” which was cancelled after a season. Both “National Treasure” films are currently available on the Disney+ service.
