Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania was supposed to herald a new phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe while further introducing the new headline villain. The movie experienced pandemic delays and a release date slippage. There was a norovirus outbreak within the production, and post-production was squeezed.
Visual FX came under fire, and then the actor who played the main villain was arrested. The movie scored mixed reviews, and the box office take of $476.1 million worldwide was considered underperformance.
This led to Marvel Studios entering a more introspective state, where the non-stop production line was slowed as it sought to return to previous heights.
Katy O’Brian played Quantum Realm rebel fighter and community leader Jentorra. She has been out doing promotion for Love Lies Bleeding and in an interview with EW last week she spoke about the challenges on-set:
“That was absolutely chaotic. I think we were getting new pages until the last day, and I think I was getting new fights the last day. I just show up, and they’re like, ‘Here’s a new fight.’”
This chimes with other reports from the set, including the infamous fallout with VFX workers and effects houses. Victoria Alonso was removed from her senior position with oversight of this area in the fallout.
Marvel is now focusing on fewer productions and improving quality control. Ant-Man is included in the Avengers line-up for Phase 5 and beyond.
