Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” pulled in over $12 million in preview screenings on Thursday night with $4.5 million of that coming from IMAX screens alone.
The number includes $2 million from an IMAX fan screening on February 25th. The preview total is on par with the likes of “Deadpool” and the first “The Hobbit” with those movies opening to $132 million and $84 million for the weekend.
In comparison the first “Dune” snagged $5.1 million in previews ahead of a $17.5M opening day.
The film debuted in a few overseas markets Wednesday and also opened further internationally on Thursday. By end of Thursday it has raked in $20.8 million overseas. It is the No. 1 U.S. title in all markets.
Both critics and audiences are loving the film with critics at 94% and audiences at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Estimates for the weekend remain high with the studio suggesting a conservative $65 million whereas rivals are indicating as high as $80-90 million.
