Making an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Friday, actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach has finally spoken about his casting as Ben Grimm/The Thing in Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Fantastic Four” film.
In the comics, the quartet are astronauts remade into superheroes after they’re exposed to cosmic rays in space. Grimm, best friend of Reed Richards (Pedo Pascal), is transformed into a giant with orange boulders for a body – giving him super strength.
Michael Chiklis portrayed the character using a physical suit and a lot of make-up in the two “Fantastic Four” films in the mid 2000s. Jamie Bell took on the role in 2015’s reboot in which the character was a CG creation with Bell wearing a motion capture tracking suit on set.
Moss-Bachrach confirmed he will also be doing motion capture rather than a physical suit:
“In the past, I think they’ve done a suit. Michael Chiklis wore a suit that apparently was really uncomfortable, and it’s kind of… we’re past that. It’s a little kind of cosplay, kind of amateur that kind of stuff now with the technology we have. So yeah, I think it’s mostly performance captured – motion capture, performance capture.”
Kimmel also asked Moss-Bachrach to confirm if the poster released by Marvel means that the film would be set in the 1960s. Moss-Bachrach would only say: “That image does seem to be ’60s themed”.
Matt Shakman will direct from a screenplay written by Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer.
The new “Fantastic Four” is set to release in theaters July 25th 2025.
