Following the warmly received trailer the other week, which led to a wave of nostalgia for 1990s cartoon fans, the showrunner of the upcoming “X-Men ’97” series on Disney+ has cleared up one question about the new show.

Beau DeMayo participated in a Q&A box on his Instagram account this week following the trailer premiere and a fan asked whether “X-Men ’97” was canon to the MCU, to which DeMayo offered a straightforward answer: “We are our own thing”.

The series will have no ties or impact on the MCU, rather serving as a straight sequel series to the original 1990s “X-Men” animated series.

As a result, the new ten-episode run picks up after the events of the original show’s fifth season in which Charles Xavier has died and left behind a mission for his pupils. The show has already scored a second season renewal.

Though there have been cameos by Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in the films, the X-Men’s official arrival in the MCU truly doesn’t begin in the MCU until “Deadpool and Wolverine” this year.

“X-Men 97” will premiere on the Disney+ service on March 22nd.
