Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters fleshed out the Monsterverse with a lot more detail. Godzilla Minus One showed what was possible. So where will they go with Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire? According to the director, you might be surprised with where he gets his inspiration from.

The first directing returnee to the Legendary Monsterverse, filmmaker Adam Wingard is back to helm the movie. This is an all-new adventure that features Kong and Godzilla fighting against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence… and ours.

Wingard gave an interview to Empire about Godzilla X Kong, and mentioned the tone of the movie and a surprising source of inspiration – 1980s all-time action classic Lethal Weapon:

“There’s a bit of a truce — Godzilla’s in control of the surface world and Kong is down in Hollow Earth,

It wasn’t, ‘Okay, give me a call when something goes wrong, Kong. And I, Godzilla, will rush to the rescue!’

The buddy-cop dysfunctional relationship dynamic is probably the best one to describe Godzilla and Kong. My influences are always embedded with the ‘80s, and the ‘80s were prime for [that] storyline. There’s a lot of misunderstanding – the way that the monsters communicate isn’t straightforward.”

So Godzilla will be too old for this shit? What about Kong?

“There’s a personal journey that Kong’s going through. This is his version of a training routine,”

For some reason, I am now picturing Kong doing push-ups while Joe Esposito’s You’re The Best Around plays, which I am 95% sure is not what he means and won’t happen.

Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, Dan Stevens, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen co-star in the movie which was penned by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opens in cinemas on April 12th.
