Four years ago, during the early days of the pandemic, came the news that Sony Pictures was reportedly developing a reimagining of the cult 1997 horror film “Anaconda”.
The studio had reportedly hired Evan Daugherty (“Snow White and the Huntsman”) to pen the script. Then last year came ord that Tom Gormican, the director of the Nicolas Cage meta film “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” was now writing the script.
Today, Jeff Sneider is reporting on The Hot Mic podcast that the new “Anaconda” film will go the “New Nightmare” meta route – with actors playing heightened versions of themselves as they film a new “Anaconda” movie on location – before things get real and deadly.
Sneider stresses that at least one key actor, if not actors, in question have not yet signed up for the project so things could change.
Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson, Kari Wuhrer and Jonathan Hyde starred in the 1997 original whichfollowed a documentary film crew in the Amazon that comes across an obsessed Paraguayan hunter (Jon Voight) looking to find a legendary anaconda.
The hunter derails the expedition for his own purpose, with the filmmakers now forced to contend with a murderous madman and a giant snake that will squeeze the life out of them and swallow them whole. It launched a franchise, including one theatrical sequel and three direct-to-home releases.
