There were many rumors swirling about the runtime of Alex Garland’s upcoming Civil War. At one point, it was claimed the movie would be 195 minutes long. That is 3 hours and 15 minutes. The reality is much more modest.

The official runtime for the Ex Machina and Annihilation writer/directors latest project is just 109 minutes. That’s 1 hour and 49 minutes. This has been confirmed by distributor A24, and reported in Variety.

The story takes place in the near-future United States. The movie is a satire, a road movie, and an “elevated shooter” – whatever that is? It is set in a time shortly after 19 states seceded from the USA, including Washington, Montana, Georgia, Louisiana, and Minnesota.

Factions now exist across the former nation, including a confederation of South Eastern states under the Florida Alliance. The migration-based blue takeover of Texas was completed, and Texas is now part of the Western Forces faction with California, under a US flag that has only two stars.

The blurb says:

“In the near future, a team of journalists travel across the United States during a rapidly escalating civil war that has engulfed the entire nation. Struggling to survive during a near-future civil war where the government becomes a dystopian dictatorship and partisan extremist militias regularly commit political violence.”

Kirsten Dunst stars as as a warzone photographer whose family is making their way across the destabilized former nation. The cast also includes Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. Gibbs, and Jess Matney.

Gregory Goodman, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich produce for A24 and DNA Films. The budget is said to be an impressively low $50 million, though this still makes it A24’s most expensive project to date.

Civil War is targeting an April 26th 2024 release and will be available in IMAX.
