The DC Comics adaptation “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” won the Christmas box-office, but Hollywood is far from being in a celebratory mood.

The James Wan-directed title pulled in $27.7 million over the traditional three-day weekend and is tracking to come in at $40 million for the four-day holiday frame domestically.

It joins the string of DC misfires this year with “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” debuting to $30 million, “The Flash” to $55 million and “Blue Beetle” to $25 million.

With a budget of $205 million, its offshore returns need to be strong and so far is performing better overseas where it’s expected to earn a further $80 million by end of today.

“Wonka” is looking to take second place, pulling in $18 million for the three-day and $28 million for the four-day. “Migration” will be third with $12.4 million for the three-day and $17.5 million for the four-day, whilst “Anyone But You” is fourth with $5.9 million and $8 million.

Indian film “Salaar Part 1” will be fifth with $5.7 million and $6.9 million, and “The Iron Claw” debuts in sixth with $4.9 million and $6.5 million.

New films join the fray today with “The Boys in the Boat” and “Ferrari” pulling in $1.74 million and $0.66 mllion respectively in Christmas Eve previews. The sheer volume of releases is expected to keep multiplexes busy for the coming few weeks.
