Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Echo” series marks the company’s first TV-MA project and the first under its Marvel Spotlight banner – meaning it’s less dependent on MCU continuity and less worried about fitting the Disney-Marvel image.
That also might be why the marketing for the show has been fairly minimal beyond some recent trailers that have played up both the binge-watch release strategy and the adult sensibilities of the project.
The five-episode streaming event series spotlights deaf Native American hero Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) who has the talent to imitate any opponent’s fighting style. She is pursued by Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) criminal empire. When the journey brings her to her hometown in Oklahoma, she must confront her own family and legacy.
In an early interview about the show with EW, director and producer Sydney Freeland spoke about the series and how she was able to tell a tale without restrictions on the brutal action on screen. However, that’s not what she’s most proud of:
“Because we’re dealing with a story that is more street-level, it is a little more grounded and a little more visceral. We’re leaning into the TV-MA aspect of it.
As we progressed through the production, I had the chance to say, ‘Okay so what if this guy gets his head smashed onto the table, and actually loses a couple of teeth?’ That’s the character and that’s the world: She’s a criminal and she’s a villain, she’s killing people. And the response was, ‘Yeah, let’s try it!’.
I’m so excited for people to see what she can do. Yes, we’ve got fight sequences, but one of the things I’m most proud of from this series is how emotional it is. Alaqua is just the beating heart of this show.”
Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Graham Greene, Cody Lightning, Charlie Cox, Devery Jacobs, and Zahn McClarnon also star in the project which will stream on January 9th on both Disney+ and Hulu simultaneously.
