A new report at Daniel RPK (via World of Reel) suggests that “The Cabin in the Woods” and “Bad Times at the El Royale” writer/director Drew Goddard has emerged as the top choice to direct the next “Spider-Man” film if Jon Watts opts out.

Watts has helmed the three Tom Holland-led “Spider-Man” films and, a few weeks ago, a report emerged suggesting Watts wanted to move on.

Goddard, who did uncredited screenplay polishes on the first two “Avengers” films, was famously set to serve as showrunner on Netflix’s “Daredevil” but exited after a few months just before casting began.

The reason for his exit? He was to work on Marvel’s “Sinister Six” film at Sony Pictures – a project that didn’t end up happening. Most recently Goddard was part of the writers’ room assembled by James Gunn to map out the new DC Universe.

The status of the fourth Holland-led “Spider-Man” film remains unclear as there have been discussions but nothing locked in yet be it production start or casting.

The talk comes as Disney+ has reportedly abruptly removed the animated series “The Spectacular Spider-Man” from its service – a little over a year after it was added.
