Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has long been the poster boy for the theatrical experience above everything else. More recently he’s also been something of a champion for physical media as his “Oppenheimer” film hit disc last week.

Turns out he may have been too good at his job. ComicBook.com reports that a flood of social media postings has indicated that “Oppenheimer” is virtually impossible to find on 4K UHD disc at major retailers and are “sold out just about everywhere”.

In fact, the situation has gotten bad enough that online re-sellers are reportedly charging double or triple the price for a copy of that 4K disc version.

Searching the words “oppenheimer sold out” on social media and a flood of postings show up of people not finding the disc in stores and screenshots of online retailers with ‘Out of Stock’ listed under the film.

The more regular Blu-ray and regular DVD versions are easier to find but “even those have been a bit difficult”. The film hitting disc during the busy Black Friday shopping week likely didn’t help – even as it was released with no discounts.

It’s hoped this will be seen as a win for physical media in a time when it is in jeopardy as distributors and retailers are phasing out discs in various global markets.

As it’s such a major release for Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, we can likely expect those suppliers out of stock to be resupplied shortly.
