Oscar winners Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are set to executive produce a TV series re-imagining of the thriller “Cape Fear” at Universal Pictures.

Marking their first-ever TV collaboration, the duo are teaming with series creator, executive producer and showrunner Nick Antosca (“The Act,” “Hannibal,” “Chucky”) on the project, which will be backed by Amblin Television and UCP.

The series is dubbed an unconventional take on the IP that draws from John D. MacDonald’s novel and the two feature film adaptations – the second of which Scorsese himself directed back in 1991.

The series is dubbed a “tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century.” It will follow a pair of married attorneys when an infamous killer from their past gets released after years in prison.

Alex Hedlund, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are also executive producing with a potential major bidding war for the project about to get underway with the series potentially finding a home on a major streamer or premium cabler.

Antosca has reportedly been obsessed with both “Cape Fear” movies since childhood and approached Universal about adapting the property.
