By Nintendo has announced plans to develop a live-action film adaptation of its “The Legend of Zelda” game franchise.
“The Maze Runner” helmer Wes Ball has been set to direct the project. Ball most recently helmed “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” which dropped its first trailer last week.
The game series follows Link, the courageous Master Sword-wielding hero of the kingdom of Hyrule which also includes the wise Princess Zelda. On his adventures, Link clashes with the dark lord Ganondorf who seeks the power of a sacred relic known as the Triforce.
The project will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. with more than 50% financed by Nintendo.
Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad will produce. Miyamoto says in a statement he’s been working on the live-action film adaptation “for many years now” and have “officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production.”
He advises: “It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
The news comes as Nintendo is hot off the $1.3 billion box-office success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” which has become the highest-grossing film of the year to date.
