A second remake of the famed football comedy “The Longest Yard” is in the works at Paramount Pictures and Gunpowder & Sky.

The Robert Aldrich-directed original was released in 1974 and starred Burt Reynolds as Paul ‘Wrecking’ Crewe, a former star quarterback who is sentenced to eighteen months in Citrus State Prison where he puts together the Mean Machine team.

Peter Segal directed the 2005 remake starring Adam Sandler as the washed-up quarterback who puts together a team in prison in exchange for a reduced sentence. Chris Rock, James Cromwell, Nelly and William Fichtner co-starred along with Reynolds in a different role.

The 2005 remake cost $90 million, expensive for a comedy, and only earned $191.5 million at the box-office globally. The prior film was a much greater success, costing just $2.9 million and earning $43 million.

“Winning Time,” “The Boondocks,” “American Gods” and “Runaways” writer/producer Rodney Barnes is attached to pen the script for the new take. Barnes has several projects in development, including a miniseries based on the life of golf star Tiger Woods.

David Gale and Van Toffler will produce the new incarnation.
