By One of the more amusing minor kerfuffles in regards to this past July’s monstrous success of “Barbie” was one of the film’s gags poking light fun at the Snyder Cut of “Justice League”.
In the film, Alexandra Shipp’s Barbie has just been deprogrammed from her brainwashing by the hyper-masculine Kens and admits her time during that phase made her feel like she was “very invested” in the film.
Turns out, however, that wasn’t the gag in the original drafts of the script. Instead, it was a big ol’ reference to 1982’s “Blade Runner” and the different cuts of it.
During a recent appearance at the Writers Guild of America West headquarters (via Variety), the film’s director/co-writer Greta Gerwig explained the original plan:
“One of the Barbies says to Ken, ‘Oh my god, I never would have realized that Deckard was a replicant’. Then when she gets unbrainwashed, there’s a version where she said, ‘I liked the voiceover. I needed it to help me understand what was happening. Nobody’s following this.’”
Gerwif’s partner and “Barbie” co-writer Noah Baumbach was also on hand and said there were very brief plans to include “Blade Runner” director Ridley Scott himself in a cameo, but it didn’t pan out: “It wasn’t making fun of him. We loved him as we love all of our references.”
Gerwig also says: “Every reference we had was out of love. We love Sly Stallone. Everything was a lighters-up tribute.” The quotes come as the film is trending on social media right now due to an unfortunate tweet by Elon Musk.
There are no options or deals in place for Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling to return for a “Barbie” sequel, but after more than a billion dollars at the box-office – you can bet they want one.
