The John Cena and Alison Brie-led action comedy has earned a rather ignominious honor – it’s one of the joint-worst films of all time according to critics at Rotten Tomatoes.
The title has received a rare 0% positive rating on the site from the 22 reviews submitted thus far. That’s far lower than the audience score at a much more average 77%.
In fact, it’s especially bad when placed next to other notable stinkers. The film’s 0% and 2.6/10 average rating ties it with 2020’s “The Last Days of American Crime” (2.6) and is lower than “Jaws: The Revenge” (2.7),” “London Fields” (2.7) and “Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever” (2.8).
A search of multiple titles only yielded two films with worse average ratings – the Travolta-led “Gotti” (2.2) and the Adam Sandler western comedy “The Ridiculous 6” (2.4).
The films follows ex-special forces operative Mason Pettis (Cena) who is stuck in a dead-end desk job when he reluctantly takes on a freelance gig to provide private security for disgraced journalist Claire Wellington (Brie).
Wellington, trying to make a comeback, has landed a major interview with the ruthless and impeccably dressed dictator Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba) of the country of Pandoña.
When a military coup breaks out just as she’s about to get the scoop of a lifetime, the unlikely trio must figure out how to survive the jungle AND each other in order to make it out alive.
Alice Eve, Marton Csokas and Christian Slater co-star in the film which hails from “Taken” director Pierre Morel. “Freelance” is currently out in cinemas.
