Lionsgate’s upcoming prequel film “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” has hit long-range tracking forecasts with the title targeting a $50 million domestic opening weekend.
Marvel has opted to stick to its release plans for the title which is being sold mostly on its brand recognition as opposed to its young stars, with the distributor focused heavily on pre-made marketing material.
With “Dune: Part Two” having exited the month for March next year, Hunger’s only real competition is from “The Marvels” the weeke before, “Trolls Band Together” opening the same week, and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” the week after.
Those films are targeting starts of $50-75 million, $21-31 million and $16-21 million according to estimates from the likes of Box-Office Pro and others.
The Francis Lawrence-directed adaptation of the Suzanne Collins-led book reportedly cost around $100 million and thus is likely to be fairly cost-effective. It’s also been stated to be a one-off with no plans for follow-ups.
Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth star in the film set at a time when Donald Sutherland’s Coriolanus Snow is the 18-year-old last hope of a fading lineage who sees his chance to rise to power in the form of a young woman from impoverished District 12.
