Canadian-born American writer/director/producer Veena Sud has been hired as showrunner of Amazon and MGM Studios’s planned TV series based on Stieg Larsson’s novel “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”.

The project, first reported as being in development back in May 2020, will unfold in the world of the Millennium novels from the late Larsson. At the time it was tipped to be a new standalone story about the novel’s main character Lisbeth Salander.

Plot specifics at this point however are under wraps so it’s not clear if this will still be a whole new story or will be a more direct adaptation of the property. Left Bank Pictures is also producing.

Larsson penned three books before he passed with David Lagercrantz and Karin Smirnofftaking over the series and writing four more. The books have sold more than 100 million copies combined worldwide.

Those first three books were previously adapted for Swedish film and television with Noomi Rapace’s performance as Salander widely praised. The late Michael Nyqvist also starred as Mikael Blomkvist.

David Fincher directed the Hollywood film adaptation starring Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist. A low-budget sequel based on the fourth book, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” saw Claire Foy taking over the Salander role.

Sud is best known for developing and serving as showrunner on the well-regarded AMC remake of Danish series sensation “The Killing (Forbrydelsen)”. More recently, she created and executive produced the Netflix series “Seven Seconds”
