With Halloween fast approaching, and our 31 Days Of Horror countdown gathering pace at Last Movie Outpost, the timing of this trailer fits well. Paramount Pictures has released a trailer for the fifth movie in the Scream franchise. Formerly knows as Scream 5, it will now be known simply as Scream.

The series began with Wes Craven’s 1996 original Scream. It was a big hit and was lauded for deconstructing slasher movies and creating a tight, frightening thriller around the lore. The series has traditionally been economic to make but has grossed over $608 million in worldwide box-office receipts.

Kevin Williamson created the story for the franchise and his original script for the first movie was bought by Miramax and developed under the Dimension Films label by Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Series director Craven famously ran into conflicts with the Motion Picture Association of America over the series and was forced to reduce the violence in Scream 3 due to the Columbine High School massacre.

The series bucked the trend for slasher movies, in that it became notable for its use of established and recognizable actors. The opening scene featuring Drew Barrymore remains famous in slasher movie history.

The 2022 sequel will reunite the surviving members of the original cast in the form of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette. Scream 4 star Marley Shelton will also return. Campbell, Cox, and Arquette have appeared in all four films to date, as has Roger L. Jackson, who voices the various Ghostface killers. He also returns.

Newcomers to the franchise include Jenna Ortega as Tara, Melissa Barrera as Sam, Jack Quaid as Richie, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy, Mikey Madison as Amber, Mason Gooding as Chad, Kyle Gallner as Vince, Sonia Ammar as Liv, and Dylan Minnette as Wes.

The movie will be directed by Ready or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Scream will open on January 14th, 2022.
