Netflix is currently filming a sixth and final season of “Cobra Kai,” whilst a new film take on “The Karate Kid” is also on the way bringing back stars from two prior incarnations.
With almost every living cast member from the original films popping up in either of these productions, it begs the obvious question – where’s “The Next Karate Kid” star Hilary Swank.
Swank played Julie Pierce in the widely panned 1994 film which served as a fourth installment of the original franchise. Despite the reaction to it, fans have long hoped Swank might make a cameo on”Cobra Kai”.
In an interview with Collider to promote “Ordinary Angels” opening this week, Swank was asked if she’ll be in either the new movie or the final run of “Cobra Kai”. She’s says she wasn’t aware of the film:
“Is there a new Karate Kid being made? What are they calling it? […] Because I was The Next Karate Kid.”
As for “Cobra Kai,” she indicates she isn’t coming back even though she gets asked about it a lot:
“I don’t think I am, unfortunately. I know. It’s, like, the number one question I get right now. Most people usually say, ‘What’s it like working with Clint Eastwood?’ But I think, ‘Are you going to be on Cobra Kai has almost surpassed that?’”
Ben Wang will lead the new “Karate Kid” film about a Chinese teenager who resides on the East Coast and seeks direction through martial arts. Both the final “Cobra Kai” and the new film are targeting late 2024 releases.
