HBO has handed out a fifth-season renewal for its anthology series “True Detective,” the order coming through just days after the fourth season finale aired on the premium cabler.
Back onboard for the ride is “True Detective: Night Country” showrunner Issa Lopez who has also signed an overall deal with HBO.
She will run the fifth season of the series after having taken over the franchise from creator Nic Pizzolatto. Lopez will also create and develop new projects for HBO.
Pizzolatto’s overall deal with HBO expired, but the network retains ownership of the series. Pizzolatto remains credited as an executive producer but has made it very clear he had zero involvement in ‘Night Country’ of which he has been openly critical about on social media.
HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi says in a statement:
“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie [Foster] and Kali [Reis]’ impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”
The order comes as ‘Night Country’ ranks as the most-watched season of the show to date – topping the first season with an episode average of 12.7 million viewers across multiple platforms.
