“Poor Things” and “The Favourite” director Yorgos Lanthimos is set to remake Jang Joon-hwan’s South Korean 2003 fantasy comedy “Save the Green Planet” for Element Pictures.
Lanthimos is reportedly expected to start shooting the film in the U.K. and New York this summer. Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe will produce.
The long-gestating and eccentric black comedy follows a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion.
A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective. The original film became a cult hit and had plenty of festival play when it was around.
Jang himself was previously attached to direct the remake based on a screenplay by Will Tracy (“The Menu”).
Lanthimos has already shot his next release “Kinds of Kindness” which has been several months in post-production already. Emma Stone, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe and Joe Alwyn co-star in that.
