The long-gestating “Masters of the Universe” film has scored some new life today as LAIKA studio chief and film director Travis Knight is reportedly in final negotiations to direct the movie.
Deadline broke the news, saying the deal has still not closed at and other elements on the project are still coming together – but the “Kubo and the Two Strings” and “Bumblebee” director is very much the top choice to take the helm.
Chris Butler is reportedly rewriting the script from an initial draft written by David Callaham, and Aaron and Adam Nee.
In addition, Amazon MGM Studios is in final negotiations for rights to the project and Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and Escape Artists’ Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal to produce.
The film will be based on the popular 1980s “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” cartoon series which unfolds on the planet of Eternia – a land of magic and technology.
The story follows Prince Adam, the young son of Eternia’s rulers King Randor and Queen Marlena, who can transform into He-Man – the most powerful man in the universe. He uses his powers to defend Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor who wishes to conquer the mysterious fortress of Castle Grayskull.
