Dakota Johnson recently sat down for an interview with L’Officiel magazine and said that she finds it hard to get unique projects made. She also calls out streaming executives for being afraid to try anything new and not trusting “creatives”.
Johnson told the publication:
“I am discovering that it’s really fucking bleak in this industry. The people who run streaming platforms don’t trust creative people or artists to know what’s going to work, and that is just going to make us implode. It’s really heartbreaking. It’s just fucking so hard. It’s so hard to get anything made.”
Crikey! To bastardize a phrase from Commissioner Gordon – is Dakota Johnson becoming the hero Hollywood needs but doesn’t deserve right now? She goes on:
“People are just so afraid, and I’m like, why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave? It just feels like nobody knows what to do and everyone’s afraid. That’s what it feels like. Everyone who makes decisions is afraid. They want to do the safe thing, and the safe thing is really boring.”
Hear, hear Ms Johsnon! Dakota saying this so soon after filming Madame Webb would suggest she found the whole experience almost as excruciating as watching the trailer.
Setting Up TeaTime Pictures
It’s about time someone in the industry stood up and spoke for all of us who are suffering at the hands of the decision-makers in Hollywood. I’m confident when I say that all of us are sick and tired of prequels, sequels, and spin-offs.
I despair at watching the franchises we grew up with, being used for propaganda and to push “the message”. And I grow weary of watching once great movies being adapted for TV, only to see them fail and then disappear without so much as a whimper. We need new and unique movies and shows to entertain us and hopefully, Johnson is the one to step up and make it happen.
Thankfully, our new hero, Dakota Johnson does have her own production company called TeaTime Pictures that will hopefully right so many wrongs and end our suffering. Johnson explains that TeaTime Pictures, aims to tell intricate, detailed, and nuanced stories with… powerful female characters at the center. Oh, Dakota, you had us for a minute and now you’ve ruined everything.
Sorry Outposters, I thought we had an unexpected hero. As you were.
