If ever there was a demonstration of how the cost of movies is killing Hollywood, it was Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. It garnered critical acclaim. It made going on for $600 million. Yet it was a flop. Why?
The budget of $220 million, not including marketing and promotion, was the killer. Then it was also swept out of premium screens by Barbenheimer, meaning it was significantly down on the nearly $800 million take of some of its predecessors.
This caused a major rethink. Part One and Part Two were being filmed back-to-back as franchise cappers, bringing the story of Ethan Hunt and the M.I. Force to a close.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two was supposed to originally arrive on June 28th, 2024. It was pushed out by nearly a year to May 23rd, 2025. When the delay was announced, there were also rumors the titles would be changing.
This has been confirmed as the seventh film – Dead Reckoning Part One – is now set to land on Paramount+ on January 25th in the US. When it lands, it will be with a new title of simply Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning removing all reference to being part of the doubleheader.
Look for Mission: Impossible 8 to have an all-new title. It is currently finishing up an extended production. What is the betting some of that will be reshoots?
