One of the weirder conspiracy theories to hit the online sphere in recent times has been that Taylor Swift, the singer who is a whole industry unto herself, has close ties to Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming “Argylle” film.
The film itself is dubbed a “Romancing the Stone”-esque caper movie in which Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), an agoraphobic and introverted spy novelist, is drawn into the activities of a sinister underground syndicate.
Within the film’s universe, we also see scenes from Conway’s new novel played out as fictional scenes on screen which feature spy-style action. Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa star in those story-within-a-story scenes amongst others.
The real life mystery ties to the source material. The film is based on a just published book, dubbed a much more straightforward thriller, by an author also named ‘Elly Conway’.
The manuscript to said book led to a reported $200 million deal for the film rights several years ago with screenwriter Jason Fuchs adapting the work into the film.
The identity of the real ‘Elly Conway’ has been a mystery for years and Taylor Swift fans became convinced it’s her as she wears argyle sweaters and the film centers on a Scottish Fold cat (Swift owns two)
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Vaughn has shut down that talk saying:
“I’m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me – this is the power of celebrity and the internet – and said, ‘You never told me Taylor wrote the book!’ an I’m looking at her going, ‘What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didn’t write the book!’ And I was laughing because I was like, ‘It’s not true! She didn’t write the book!’ But my daughter was convinced of it.
There is a real book … and it’s a really good book, and there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it’s not Taylor Swift. And I say that because I imagine Taylor Swift has a load of people trying to jump on her bandwagon left, right, and center. I don’t want to be a part of that club. I did read the conspiracies and I was like, ‘Wow, they don’t leave a stone unturned!’ But it’s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn’t write the book.”
Where Swift’s influence can be seen in the film is the cat with Vaughn admitting the singer is the reason a Scottish Fold cat appears in the film. More specifically it’s Vaughn’s own cat whom he and his wife, supermodel Claudia Schiffer, were convinced to adopt after watching Swift’s “Miss Americana” doco.
“Ironically, what she is responsible for is the Scottish Fold. I got home one day, it was Christmas, and I was like, ‘What the f— is that noise?’ And I’m running around the house and I hear a noise, and the kids had seen a Taylor Swift documentary and there was a Scottish Fold in that, and they’d persuaded my wife, Claudia [Schiffer], to get them the kitten for Christmas. It was bought without my permission and hidden from me.”
Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Bryan Cranston, Rob Delaney, and Catherine O’Hara co-star in the film which opens in theaters February 2nd.
