HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” returned five years after its last season with a robust debut on Sunday night.
Warner Bros. Discovery is claiming the premiere episode pulled in around 2.0 million viewers across Max and linear telecasts in Live+Same Day – compare that to other recent HBO debut figures like “The White Lotus” Season 2 (1.5 million), “Succession” Season 4 (2.3 million), “Euphoria” Season 2 (2.4 million), and “The Last of Us” (4.7 million).
HBO shows usually find their numbers quadrupling or more over the coming weeks – “The White Lotus” S2 for example saw a jump to average around 15.5 million viewers per episode by the end so this is hardly the end.
HBO adds that the series was the top overall title on Max in the week leading up to the premiere, suggesting people were rewatching the prior seasons.
In the wake of the premiere, showrunner Issa Lopez took to X today to ask fans to fight back against the review bombing going on over with the audience figure on Rotten Tomatoes which this morning was at 57% – substantially lower than the 92% critics score.
Those efforts are working as the audince score has since risen to 74%. Audience reviews are divided between plenty of 5-star and 1-star reviews, with a lot of the latter upset either about the lack of show creator Nic Pizzolatto or CG Caribou.
