By The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has today announced that 321 feature films have qualified for this year’s 96th Oscars.
Of that number, only 265 films are also eligible in the best picture category which has additional requirements to meet diversity and inclusion benchmarks – requirements that have been implemented for the Oscars from this year.
Unless opting out of best picture consideration, films must meet two out of four requirements that aim to require fairer representation in on-screen roles or subject matter; key creative and other crew roles; paid internships or training opportunities; or jobs in a film’s marketing and distribution.
Budget would appear to have nothing to do with it as the list of titles that qualified for the Oscars but are not eligible for Best Picture include Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels”.
Also missing out are Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator,” the well-received GameStop short stock film “Dumb Money,” the Jennifer Lopez-led assassin thriller “The Mother,” and concert juggernaut “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”.
That absence could be because those films opted out of Best Picture consideration rather than failing to meet the new standards though. Other films which didn’t make it include animated features like “The Monkey King” and “Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia,” along with several documentaries.
Nominations voting begins this week with the nominations to be announced on January 23rd. The 96th Oscars will be held on March 24th at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
