Amazon’s Prime Video will soon release a series adaptation of the 2005 rom-com spy thriller “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”.
The original was built on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s star power and a clever premise, whereas the new series will see Donald Glover and Maya Erskine take on the lead roles and change up the premise a bit.
That leads to the obvious question of why? In an open letter, co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane admits she had many of the same questions everyone on the internet had:
“While we asked questions, so did the internet trolls. Once we were announced, we saw the comment, ‘Who needs this show?’ We didn’t blame them.
In a culture heavily inundated with remakes, this was a reasonable reaction. No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie. But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original.”
Sloane, who previously worked with Glover on “Atlanta” and also wrote on FX’s “Fargo,” says the idea of the series is to ‘subvert’ the spy genre and put the focus on a deliberately less glamorous and more down to Earth couple:
“As artists I think it’s typical to begin a creative journey with a boatload of philosophical questions. What would a series feel like if our heroes weren’t the two most beautiful people on the planet, but instead, were two lonely people, two underdogs, wanting more from life than what they currently had?
What if our John and Jane could be anyone, could be you and me? If James Bond put it all on the line out of loyalty to his country, we had to consider why some might do the same in America.”
Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Paul Dano, Parker Posey, Ron Perlman, Wagner Moura, Sarah Paulson, Eiza González, Billy Campbell and Alexander Skarsgard co-star.
The series is set to premiere on February 2nd. Check out a new featurette offering a behind-the-scenes look at the series below.
