In the wake of the great critical reviews, sales for Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” film are surging, with box-office estimates going up.
According to EmpireCity Box Office, projections of a $40-50 million domestic debut are being revised upward, with numbers now pointing to a potential $60 million opening or more.
With a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and 79 on Metacritic, the film has not only easily landed the best reviews of the franchise to date but some of the best for a horror film in some time.
It also looks set to open to the best box-office numbers of the series as well, even as it has come under fire from a section of the game fanbase who aren’t happy with it essentially being a standalone film that ignores the lore and doesn’t include any familiar characters.
Those dismissals are expected to be drowned out by walk-ups curious to check it out after they learn it requires no previous familiarity with the franchise.
It’s also another hit for Sony right as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has finally cooled down at the box office.
Warner Bros. Pictures has Cregger’s next film, “The Flood,” which will launch in 2028.
