SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “DOCTOR WHO: THE GIGGLE”
One of the big questions left in the wake of the final “Doctor Who” 60th anniversary special, “The Giggle,” is just what the situation will be going forward.
We know both David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor and Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor exist simultaneously with the former effectively semi-retired to a quiet life.
We also know the Gatwa-era is being penned as something of a mini-reboot with next year’s new run to be dubbed ‘Season 1’ and with the show being done in a way to help bring in newcomers globally via the Disney+ platform.
It raises the obvious question as to how much will we see of Tennant’s Doctor in the future – will the show have cameos, callbacks, secret specials?
For now, judging by Tennant and showrunner Russell T. Davies’ BBC commentary track for “The Giggle,” it seems like Tennant is as retired from the . Talking about the lingering impact of the episode’s bi-generation:
Tennant: “All I’m gonna be asked is ‘So what does that mean? When’s the next story? When’s the…’
Davies: “Yes, I think that’s starting already. Let me tell you, you get mentioned once.”
Tennant: “Oh! Showbiz is harsh!”
Davies: “One mention!”
Whether that mention takes place in the upcoming Christmas special, or sometime in the new season early next year it’s not clear.
Filming is already underway on Gatwa’s second full season as The Doctor to air in 2025 so it seems as though Tennant popping up again at some point is still some time off.
