Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner was set in 2019, Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” took place thirty years later but still incorporated elements of the original Scott film.
With the upcoming Prime Video series “Blade Runner 2099” though, the leap of fifty years from the last film has allowed the series to essentially serve as a soft reboot.
Speaking with Collider recently, the show’s lead star Michelle Yeoh says neither of the previous films are required viewing for the show:
“I think the most interesting thing I’ve heard so far is that even if you’ve not watched the first two movies – because in this new generation, the younger audience might not have watched the first one – you would understand because of the way the story evolves. And I think the complication between the two characters, between Hunter [Schafer] and myself, it’s… Say no more. [Laughs].”
The new series portrays a radically transformed Los Angeles where humanity is no longer in control, and the replicants have won after an uprising.
They are now the power brokers of the city and humans are second-class citizens. Michelle Yeoh stars as Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner hunting a group of missing rogue replicants while approaching the predetermined end of her own lifespan.
Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who has spent her life running from Blade Runners but must now pretend to be one. She joins Olwen’s search for the missing replicants.
Though it may be separate from the films, “Blade Runner 2049” scribe Michael Green helped develop the project while original “Blade Runner” director Ridley Scott executive produces and advised on the series which premieres November 25th.
