By Though initial reports suggested it would be a direct sequel to 1996’s “Twister,” it seems the upcoming “Twisters” will very much be its own thing and won’t continue the story from the original.
Announced last year as “a new chapter from the 1996 movie,” the project is a joint production between Universal and Warner Bros. Pictures with “Minari” helmer Lee Isaac Chung directing from a script by “The Revenant” writer Mark L. Smith.
The project was fast-tracked after Steven Spielberg “flipped for the script” and quickly assembled a strong cast including Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Brandon Perea, David Corenswet, Kiernan Shipka, Sasha Lane, Anthony Ramos, Daryl McCormack and Maura Tierney among others.
When first announced it was rumored it hoped to bring Helen Hunt back with the lead character being the daughter she had with the late Bill Paxton’s character, a young woman who has caught the storm chasing bug her parents had.
That’s not the case says Smith who, speaking with Collider recently, says the whole thing is quite different from the original when it comes to the story:
“It’s a lot of fun. [Director Lee Isaac Chung] did his own thing to the script a little bit because that’s what they do, so I don’t know about some of the changes exactly. So, I don’t know the details, but it’s a separate story. It’s not a continuation of the original. But it’s just a real wild ride with some good, fun characters.
Hopefully, we can tap into what the original had because that thing is just iconic. But it’s so cool to have a director like Isaac taking on something like this. It’s just so out of his norm, and I think he’s having fun. I was texting with him a couple days ago, and it’s just all craziness of it.”
Jan de Bont helmed the original which was a major event movie at the time and earned almost $500 million at the global box office – making it the tenth highest-grossing film ever upon release.
“Twisters” is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 19th 2024.
