After “The Exorcist: Believer” bombed, Universal Pictures went back to the drawing board and instead hired “Midnight Mass” and “Doctor Sleep” filmmaker Mike Flanagan, giving him effectively carte blanche to do what he wanted with the franchise.
The result is “The Exorcist: Martyrs,” a full reboot of the franchise led by some solid names including Scarlett Johansson, John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane along with a staple of regular Flanagan actors like Rahul Kohli and Carla Gugino.
Shooting on the project wrapped over the Summer, but plot specifics of the new film have been decidedly under wraps. Now, scooper DanielRPK has seemingly revealed a basic synopsis for the film.
According to the outlet, the story follows a single-mother cop who, thirteen years after taking down a notorious satanic serial killer, investigates a new series of murders connected to her past.
At the same time, her twelve-year-old son becomes the target of a terrifying demonic force. Johansson plays the detective, with John Leguizamo as the infamous satanic serial killer known as Father Sunday.
Chiwetel Ejiofor will play a priest connected to the investigation; Laurence Fishburne is the priest who performs the exorcism, and Diane Lane plays the mother of Johansson’s character.
Set photos have previously revealed that Sasha Calle and Rahul Kohli will play cops. Other Flanagan regulars like Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Benjamin Pajak, and Carla Gugino are set for supporting roles.
Flanagan has previously said he’s aiming to make the scariest movie he’s made and to do something that “had never been done within the franchise… something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia.”
“The Exorcist: Martyrs” is slated to open in March next year.
