AMC has officially given the green light for an eight-episode first season of its proposed “Point Break” sequel series with filming to begin in early 2027 in Australia.
Word came back in December last year that AMC had begun development of a series that was essentially a combination sequel/minor reboot of the iconic 1991 Kathryn Bigelow-directed action film.
Keanu Reeves starred in the film as a rookie FBI agent named Johnny Utah, who infiltrates the Ex-Presidents – a gang of Southern California surfers who rob banks. Patrick Swayze, Lori Petty and Gary Busey co-starred.
The new series will be set 35 years after the original. A new heist crew inspired by the Ex-Presidents has emerged, and the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them.
David Kalstein (“Treadstone,” “Butterfly”) created the series and will write and executive produce alongside Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson and Ben Roberts.
Alcon Television Group, AMC Studios, and StudioCanal are co-producing the series, with the latter handling worldwide distribution outside the U.S. and Canada.
