Comedian John Mulaney is in early talks to star in a feature reimagining of classic 1960s sitcom “Get Smart” at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Currently in early development, “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” scribe Seth Grahame-Smith is penning the screenplay for the film while Charles Rovan and Andrew Lazar are set to produce.
Mel Brooks and Buck Henry created the original spy spoof series, which ran for four seasons on NBC initially, and one on CBS, from 1965-1970.
Don Adams starred as bumbling, know-it-all agent Maxwell Smart (Agent 86) opposite Barbara Feldon as the far more capable Agent 99 and Edward Platt as the Chief.
All worked for the secret U.S. government counterintelligence agency called Control, which was always engaged in battle with its evil counterpart – Kaos.
Smart, essentially a blend of Bond & Inspector Clouseau, was famously incompetent throughout the series but always got the upper hand over Kaos. The series won seven Emmys in its time, including two for Outstanding Comedy Series, and was followed by two films and a short-lived 1990s revival series.
The property was revived in 2008 with a poorly received feature film starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson that still managed to collect $230 million globally.
